Why Desalination Doesn't Work (Yet)

Tantalizing as desalinated water might sound, the energy costs have made it rather unpalatable.
"Until recently, seawater desalination was a very expensive water source solution," said Gary Crisp, an engineer for the Water Corporation of Western Australia.
Drinking seawater straight is a bad idea because your body must expel the salt by urinating more water than it actually gains. Seawater contains roughly 130 grams of salt per gallon. Desalination can reduce salt levels to below 2 grams per gallon, which is the limit for safe human consumption.
"There is significant growth in desalination capacity throughout the world, and it is anticipated to continue for sometime," says Stephen Gray of Victoria University.
Gray has been chosen to lead a new research program in Australia—where many regions lack fresh water supplies—to improve the efficiency of desalination plants.
Aristotle's efforts
Back in the 4th century B.C., Aristotle imagined using successive filters to remove the salt from seawater.
But the first actual practice of desalination involved collecting the freshwater steam from boiling saltwater. Around 200 A.D., sailors began desalinating seawater with simple boilers on their ships.
The energy required for this distillation process today makes it prohibitively expensive on a large scale. A lot of the current market for so-called "thermal desalination" has therefore been in oil-rich, water-poor countries in the Middle East.
Since the 1950s, researchers have been developing membranes that could filter out salt, similar to what Aristotle originally envisioned. Presently, this membrane technique, sometimes called "reverse osmosis," requires one-fourth of the energy and costs half of the price of distilling saltwater.
"In the last ten years, seawater reverse-osmosis has matured into a viable alternative to thermal desalination," Crisp says.
Energy is key
But even with membranes, large amounts of energy are needed to generate the high pressure that forces the water through the filter. Current methods require about 14 kilowatt-hours of energy to produce 1,000 gallons of desalinated seawater.
A typical American uses 80 to 100 gallons of water a day, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The entire country consumes about 323 billion gallons per day of surface water and another 84.5 billion gallons of ground water.
If half of this water came from desalination, the United States would need more than 100 extra electric power plants, each with a gigawatt of capacity.
Depending on local energy prices, 1,000 gallons of desalinated seawater can cost around $3 or $4. Although that might not seem like much, it is still cheaper in many places to pump water out of the ground or import it from somewhere else.
But the price difference will undoubtedly narrow, especially in regions that could experience more intense droughts owing to climate change.
Water use has been growing twice as fast as population growth, causing more and more communities to suffer water shortages. The demand for freshwater supplies will drive prices higher, making desalination increasingly attractive.
Brainstorming on membranes
The number of desalination plants worldwide has grown to more than 15,000, and efforts continue to make them more affordable.
Last month, Australia's largest scientific research agency joined with nine major universities in a membrane research program to reduce desalination energy costs, as well as maintenance costs associated with gunk sticking to membranes and fouling them up.
"Lowering the energy required for desalination and the fouling propensity of membranes are the two biggest challenges facing desalination," Gray says.
A team of diverse researchers will try to tackle these problems by developing new types of membrane materials. The goal is to cut in half the energy required for desalination.
"We would hope to have something available within the next 10 years," Gray said.
YouTube video: Desalination
Hello, I believe that desalination will eventually work as a supply because "Currently, between 10 and 13 billion gallons of water are desalinated worldwide per day. That's only about 0.2 percent of global water consumption, but the number is increasing."
ReplyDeleteAlthough it could potentially kill sea life
ReplyDeleteHow so? Explain? Can you locate any sources to support your conclusion?
DeleteI think desalination would not work because the cost of this is TOO expansive and this process takes awhile compared to other processes. In the text,"Until recently, seawater desalination was a very expensive water source solution." Some pros of desalination is that it is another source of fresh water and a con is that is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!
ReplyDeleteI think it would work. The con is the membrane would get gross and nasty. a pro is that people in drought areas with little water would have clean drinking water.
ReplyDeleteyou need more evidence than that, and a quote if you can find one.
DeleteI think that desalination will work because the filtered water that it makes is cleaner than the sea water. Therefore, the amount of people that die from bacteria in water will decrease majorly. Also, people are trying to make the desalination plants more affordable to build.
ReplyDeleteWhere's your evidence?
DeleteDesalination would work because it is increasing production in the world. According to the article, " the number of desalination plants worldwide has grown to more than 15,000." Good things that would happen is that the world will get more water to drink that is safe. It can also help solve all the water shortages that happen due to population increase. Bad things would be the cost of energy that is being used to clean the water.
ReplyDeleteI think desalination will be extremely beneficial to the United States. The author wrote,"Almost 60% of the continental U.S. is now living through drought conditions, and half of all counties have been declared disaster areas." Desalination will help prevent an even bigger drought in areas that need a greater supply of water.
ReplyDeleteDesalination could work, because it reduces the amount in ocean water. I know this because the article states, "Desalination can reduce salt levels to below 2 grams per gallon, which is the limit for safe human consumption." This evidence shows that desalination is a safe way to have more available water, and is a lot safer than drinking straight seawater.
ReplyDeleteGood quote Jaelin, but remember: don't use a comma with "because".
DeleteGood job Jaelin! I will have to use a good starting quote like that soon!
DeleteI think that desalination is a good idea. A pro is that it will get more people able to drink clean water in the world. A con is that the filtering might be expensive or not completely purify. Overall I think that desalination is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI do believe desalination will work to help, the people without water can provide them with fresh water. It will provide more water. It has a bigger resource to come from so it will take a long to run out of water. it will help the states and countries that suffer a serious drought. With all good comes bad, so a bad thing is it is really expensive. Also the pipes that filter the water could bust if they have to much pressure build up. Another theory what if the pipes get clogged or jammed then what will happen they can fix it its to deep below sea level to do anything about it.
ReplyDeleteHunter desalination is very expensive. Poor people do not have the resources to work desalination. However yes it will take longer to run out of water. Also drought is a very massive problem we face today but since desalination is so expensive we cant afford to use desalination at this point and time.
DeleteI'm both ways about this desalination idea.I say yes because in the text ''...especially in regions that could experience more intense droughts...'' and ''...population growth, causing more and more communities to suffer water shortages.'' I would also say no, because it's taking up a lot of water and it's destroying habitats for fish and other ocean life.
ReplyDeleteThat's one tough thing about argumentative writing, Anthony. Even when you can see both sides of an argument, you are not allowed to "sit on the fence"
DeleteI believe that desalination would not work. The author stated, “But the price difference will undoubtedly narrow, especially in regions that could experience more intense droughts owing to climate change.” This sentence is stating that places where there is very small to no water on the land, that it will be more expensive to the citizens. It could only possibly work in places where they have a huge body of water surrounding the land. One pro of desalination is that people will never run out of water to drink and the water supply will be high. The only con is that desalination costs very much money to do and eventually they will not have enough money to pay for cleansing the water.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but to make your evidence stronger so it can back your opinion better. For example: according to the text,"If half of this water came from desalination, the United States would need more than 100 extra electric power plants, each with a gigawatt of capacity." This will make desalination look that is unreasonable and we shouldn't do it.
DeleteI believe that desalination would work and be helpful because it helps conserve our fresh water supply because it uses the ocean water which we have an overabundance of. Desalination will save our fresh water supply and help other countries with there water supply as well. But we are taking water from precious fish and some fish could get caught in the tube and get killed and turned into fish sticks. I know there is plenty more but I do think heavily that desalinations pros over weight the cons.
ReplyDeleteI think desalination will work. The reason I think this is because the technology we use today can be implemented into the process. This technology can help clean our water for drinking and use. But this will take lots of time to build. Also this will have to be by the coast line to make it easier to get to the water. But the idea is great because if we don’t have water we can’t live really. But the down side of this is that one, we hurt habits for animals. Two, it can pollute the water in some cases.
ReplyDeleteGreat reasoning, but don't forget your direct quotes (evidence).
DeleteI think desalination would work. When we have droughts it is a good way to get water. Although desalination can be more expensive than other water sources, they are finding ways to decrease the price. I know this because the article states, “The number of desalination plants has grown to more than 15,000, and efforts continue to make them more affordable.” They are making it more affordable and it is a great water source.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think desalination would work. The US and other countries around the world has a shortage of drinkable water, which is crazy because almost 80 percent of the Earth is made of water. If we use desalination we can cut down on the amount of water wasted and increase the amount of drinking water. The article states “With water becoming a fast commodity, especially in drought-prone regions with burgeoning populations, the obvious solution is to take the salt out of sea water.”
ReplyDeleteGreat facts Kinsey, but don't forget to tell me where your information came from.
DeleteYes, I believe desalination would be a huge benefit to the U.S and other countries, because it could decrease the amount of water wasted and also provide water for those in need of it. According to the text, “Desalination can reduce salt levels to below 2 grams per gallon…” This can be very useful, because then we can reuse our water and drink water from the ocean. Less would be wasted. It is costly, however this is still very beneficial.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you McKenzie because it could decrease the amount of water that is being wasted.
DeleteWell done, McKenzie. I like your use of ellipses.
ReplyDeletedesolation is a good idea. It would also decrees the amount of water water. It will also decrees salt in the water below 2 grams. It will also increase the amount of water that people can drink. Drinking salt is a bad idea so desolation is a great idea for a new source of water.
ReplyDeleteThe article states “If half of this water came from desalination, the United States would need more than 100 extra electric power plants, each with a gigawatt of capacity.
ReplyDeleteDepending on local energy prices, 1,000 gallons of desalinated seawater can cost around $3 or $4.” With this information I can infer that desalination will work if we do it right. Some pros and cons of desalination are the following examples;
PRO’S
• If done right then we can have cleaner water.
• People who die from faulty desalination will decrease in the world if more people drink this water.
CON’S
• Even though we are fixing this problem, the amount of people who die from this will still be high.
• The article also states “Drinking seawater straight is a bad idea because your body must expel the salt by urinating more water than it actually gains. Seawater contains roughly 130 grams of salt per gallon. Desalination can reduce salt levels to below 2 grams per gallon, which is the limit for safe human consumption.”
i belive that desalination is a good idea but it can become a problem whith kids and them being picky but they will have to acecpt that desalitnioton is a good idea but they will learn
ReplyDelete"There is significant growth in desalination capacity throughout the world, and it is anticipated to continue for sometime," says Stephen Gray of Victoria University.
ReplyDeleteI agree, because we use water EVERY DAY and since the population is growing rapidly, we need more fresh water to drink. BUT, if our world over-populates and we run out of water to desalinate, then we could have a serious crisis, not to mention all the sea life that we would be potentially killing because they don't have the water that they need to live, like bass, sharks, dolphins, catfish, nemo, etc. and we would disrupt the entire sea food chain, wiping out an important source of food. So, in conclusion , desalination could be good, but also bad......
Yes I believe desalination will be a huge because the text says,"The number of desalination plants worldwide has grown to more than 15,000, and efforts continue to make them more affordable."Last month, Australia's largest scientific research agency joined with nine major universities in a membrane research program to reduce desalination energy costs, as well as maintenance costs associated with gunk sticking to membranes and fouling them up." These two things will keep fatalities from bacteria in water that causes people to get really sick and die. Also when desalination becomes more successful people will stay away form the water that isn't fully filtered.
ReplyDeleteI think that desalination would work. The reason why is that it is cleaner than the water with salt and the world would have more drinking water. One pro of desalination is that the water supply for the world would go up. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, “A typical American uses 80 to 100 gallons of water a day”. That is a lot of water that needs to be supplied. One con is that there would be many desalination plants popping up around the world. According to Michael Schirber, “The number of desalination plants worldwide has grown to more than 15,000, and efforts continue to make them more affordable”.
ReplyDeleteKelenicia Moore
DeleteI agree with with Haley because under the section "Energy is Key" it says "The entire country consumes about 323 billion gallons per day of surface water and another 84.5 billion gallons of ground water."
ReplyDeleteI believe that desalination of water is good in many ways. It helps provide more water but it is ways to expensive. Also the pressure that needs to be produced to make the water pass through the filter takes up a lot of energy. However is good to know how we can drink water from the ocean. Therefore I agree that it’s a good idea. Desalination could work but I have not many hope in it. Fishes in the oceans could get sucked in by the pressure that is taken to pump water from the ocean to the filter. Most important with all the electricity consumed with increase taxes and prizes.
ReplyDeleteI think that desalination could work if we only took small amounts of sea water at a time. Desalination can reduce salt levels. In the text it says, “ currently between 10 and 13 billion gallons of water are desalinated per day.” That is already a lot of water, but by doing this won’t we be hurting sea life? Those animals have to have salt water to survive. At least we are able to have more water.
ReplyDeleteThe number of desalination plants worldwide has grown to more than 15,000, and efforts continue to make them more affordable.
ReplyDeleteLast month, Australia's largest scientific research agency joined with nine major universities in a membrane research program to reduce desalination energy costs, as well as maintenance costs associated with gunk sticking to membranes and fouling them up. This will be a beginning of a big change.
Yes, desalination would work great. It would take out the salt in salt water, caused by a lack of water. It would also decrease the amount of water wasted. People will not have to worry about the fact that they are drinking toilet water. Drinking salt water is bad for your body, because your body has to expel the salt from your body by urinating more water than usual.
ReplyDeleteYes, desalination might work. One benefit is getting more water, to use for everyday use.For example, California is having a drought right now.Since California is very close to the ocean, citizens of California could use a lot of that water. It is very expensive, but according to the text, "Until recently, seawater desalination was a very expensive water source solution," said Gary Crisp, an engineer for the Water Corporation of Western Australia. This means that the costs are going down:therefore it is affordable.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you can locate an article explaining how/if it is getting less expensive.
DeleteI agree. If this plan works it would prevent droughts. People in third-world countries would have a way to make sure their water is safe.According to the text,"Drinking seawater straight is a bad idea because your body must expel the salt by urinating more water than it actually gains."
DeleteI think that desalination can benefit a lot of people if brought into U.S. and other countries. One pro is: it will decrease water scarcity in many places and also minimize all diseases related to dehydration. Also, one con is: it is very expensive to take out salt from the sea water and it also takes a lot of time.According to the article,"Depending on local energy prices, 1,000 gallons of desalinated seawater can cost around $3 or $4. Although that might not seem like much, it is still cheaper in many places to pump water out of the ground or import it from somewhere else." Pragya Jha
ReplyDeletegreat job!
Deletei do not think it will help because the price and how long it takes copared to the other processes in the article that are stated
ReplyDeletePlease read over your work before posting on the class blog.
DeleteDrinking this water has many things that could go wrong. I think that this is efficient, yes, but in the end would result in many bad things rather than good.
ReplyDeletewhere is your evidence?
DeleteAccording to the article,"Depending on local energy prices, 1,000 gallons of desalinated seawater can cost around $3 or $4. Although that might not seem like much, it is still cheaper in many places to pump water out of the ground or import it from somewhere else." So one pro is that water scarcity would decrease and benefit a lot of families and businesses .
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that desalination is going to benefit many of people. I believe that the citizens of the United States of America would appreciate water without salt. The water if it was added with salt would be unhealthy for people. I stand behind the choice of desalting the water .
ReplyDeleteI think desalination could work and one day be our permanent source of water. One pro is that many places don't have access to fresh water, this gets them fresh drinking water in their country. I know this is true because the article, Why Desalination Doesn't Work ( Yet), " Grey has been chosen to lead a new research program in Australia - where many regions lack fresh water supplies - to improve the efficiency of desalination plants." However, desalination costs a lot of money.
ReplyDeletei think that desolation will work because, really all that we have done in the past isn't sufficient for the environment. And it could probably benefit in a lot of ways that people will like. For example the water will be cleaner and more and less chances of risk
ReplyDeleteI believe that desalination will actually work. Ocean water or salt water may last us a while, but what happens when it runs out? Water supply will run out eventually; therefore, cleansing waste water will help us and will help sea animals from going endangered. Another way desolation is that it will help from getting diseases. If this doesn't work, maybe we should use the clean water from out toilets into drinking water and have dirty water in the toilet instead. If we do this we won't be flushing away great drinking water.
ReplyDeleteI think that getting water from the ocean is bad. because all type of animals live and use the bathroom and i am pretty sure that every body no's that the ocean is there bath room .I think that there pea poop and salt don't always get filtered. and then that means we drink it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with desalination because it's a safe way to produce fresh water, will increase the amount of fresh water around the world, and help third world countries gain the nutritional value that they need from fresh water. The main pro is,"Currently, between 10 and 13 billion gallons of water are desalinated worldwide per day. That's only about 0.2 percent of global water consumption, but the number is increasing.
ReplyDelete"There is significant growth in desalination capacity throughout the world, and it is anticipated to continue for sometime," says Stephen Gray of Victoria University," says the writer of Why Desalination Doesn't Work (Yet). Already the idea is helping our world and becoming popular. A major con with this beneficial way of creating unsalted water is how expensive it is. "A typical American uses 80 to 100 gallons of water a day, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The entire country consumes about 323 billion gallons per day of surface water and another 84.5 billion gallons of ground water," says the article Why Desalination Doesn't Work (Yet). This would obviously cost a lot of money. But, if every country set aside their differences and pitched in, desalination would be an effective and achievable solution. The only problem, as always, is money. But when it's practically life or death or dehydration, it's possible this world may realize just how bad this type of solution is needed and pitch in for it. ~Cassidy Repoza
I agree that desalination would be a great water source, however desalination is expensive. As the article "Why Desalination Doesn't Work(Yet)" states "If half of this water came from desalination, the United States would need an extra of 100 power plants." Thus causing desalinated water costing 3 or 4 dollars depending on the area. However ground pumped water could be cheaper some regions are experiencing extreme droughts. In conclusion, desalination would be a great water source the costs are a major con of desalination. (RYAN)
ReplyDeleteI think that desalination will help California because they are going through a record drought. They are currently paying 12 extra a month. They are next text to the Pacific ocean.
ReplyDeleteIf you are a good argumentative writer you can change peoples opinion of a topic. imagine that you are asking your parents for a new video game. Your parents may say no, but if you are a good argumentative write, you can give a good reason for getting the game. Like, "it's educational and it can teach me life skills.' If you can make a good point, they may get you the game. Or they will just say no.
ReplyDeleteI believe that desalination will work because " Seawater contains roughly 130 grams of salt per gallon. Desalination can reduce salt levels to below 2 grams per gallon, which is the limit for safe human consumption." and a pro of desalination is going to be very cheap over the years.
ReplyDeleteIf you know how to use the argumentative essay style then you could argue your way into anything and get out of trouble when you are accused of something.
ReplyDeleteI think that if you are a good argumentative writer you can help change peoples opinion or thought on a topic or to have a certain opinion on a topic. For a example if you want to go to college in some situations depending on how you are trying to get in to college you need to be able to persuade the person you are talking to into wanting to let you go to college there.
ReplyDeleteOnly a good argumentative essay can completely change the opinion that the reader has by persuading them into agree with the authors statement.

DeleteA good argumentative writer can almost convince anyone to agree with them on a topic. A example is: You can convince the principle to have a ice cream party every nine weeks for the students who get As or B's on their report card. This can be done by following the CERCA method.
ReplyDeleteBeing a great argumentitive essay writer has its challenges but it will impact your life by many things one is if your dad says that you broke the vase then you will have to argue and say your little brother bob did it. it will also impact your life by helping you choose a job if your good at arguing then you might want a job as a lawyer
ReplyDeleteAn Argumentative writing skill would be good to have if you wanted to be a lawyer, because a lawyer has to defend a client in a trial of justice.
ReplyDeleteAn argumentative writing can help you because it can help you get a job in life. You could defend yourself from anything, you always have to plan.
ReplyDeleteBeing a good argumentative writer is important because it can help you. It can help you because you can write a resume for an employ or someone.

ReplyDeleteAn Argumentive argument can help you by stuff when you grow up . For example ; a job, a good collage, etc . like if you wanna attend a job you have to write a argumentive argument essay . so summing it up it will help you in the future .
ReplyDeleteI believe desalination would work. I believe this because the number already increasing as stated in the article, "Currently, between 10 and 13 billion gallons of water are desalinated worldwide per day. That's only about 0.2 percent of global water consumption, but the number is increasing." Drinking water has a process, which is what we use already. In desalination take sea water and turn it into drinking water. Their is tons of horse power in the machine they use to make the water purified. The machines also make sure none of the sea water gets mixed with they purified water.
ReplyDeleteI agree desalination could possibly be a good water source . However , its way to expensive ; according to the area you live . So i agree it would be good but its too expensive , i guess thats why it says " Why Desalination Doesn't Work (Yet) " the title says ( Yet )
ReplyDeleteAn argumentative essay can easily persuade anyone to agree with you. It can also get you get into a good college or a get a good job.
ReplyDeleteYou will use your argumentative essay writing skills a lot in the real world. One example is if your a lawyer one day, you will need to be able to argue that your client is not guilty, or that someone is guilty. You will need to plan out your argument and that means you will use your argumentative essay writing skills. ( by Claire Harris)
ReplyDeleteyou would have to defend somebody in court or something like that you would have to write a paper to describe what you did or what happened
ReplyDeleteBeing a good argumentative writer will help you when your grow up and enter the real world. For example, if you work for an advertising company you have to try to persuade the reader to buy your product or do whatever your trying to persuade them to do.Being a good argumentative writer will help you ; because, you will be able to persuade the reader more easily.

If I was running for class president I would do enormous tasks to show that I am a loyal person to count on for running the state smoothly. For example you would have to persuade them to want to vote for you.
ReplyDeleteIf i was running for school president I would make the school a much better place for all students.Do you really want kids in our school to get so stress because of tests, and homework. If you stop making us do homework and tests in class i the students will donate one dollar to Africa.
ReplyDeleteIf I was running for class president I would try to put emotion in my speech. I would also do something they want me to do by using logic.
ReplyDeletei would use pathos by saying if you don't pick me we will have to do way more work and put in hours of sweat and tears into it.
ReplyDeleteIf ran for school president i would make the school where it would be fun but be educating a the same time. If i was school president i would make the school where if you stayed out of trouble you would get to do something that was time consuming and was fun, the kids that get in trouble will do something but it won't be as fun because they didn't earn it so everyone wasn't left out because of their behavior.

ReplyDelete(Claire Harris) I am a good person,I get good grades, and I just want what is best for our school as a whole. If you vote for me I vow to listen to the comments of both the students and staff. Who likes to be left out in the dust, who doesn't like having a say in our school. If you vote for me I will make learning fun for everyone, I will give everyone a chance to catch up on their work, too.My opponents may say they want the best for the school, but lets look at the facts. Their teachers and peers interviewed both said that they don't get good grades, they don't have good behavior, and they aren't nice. This is why I would make a good school president and my opponents would not.
ReplyDeleteIf I was running for school president i would use ethos, pathos, and logos so that i can make people want to vote for me
ReplyDeleteIf I was running for school president, I would be sure to include all ethos, pathos, and logos in my speech. Ethos- I volunteer everyday after school at the soup kitchen and the animal shelter. Pathos- I am a babysitter and one day, one of my 4 year olds told me i was "so sweet for helping him with his crutches " *awwww*. Logos- I would provide free ice cream because I know 56% of the students can not afford it. This is how I would make our school better!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf I was running for class president I would make the school feel more like home. Because you
ReplyDeleteMohammed is a great public speaker because he makes eye contact, uses repetition, and uses pathos in order to appeal to his audience.
ReplyDeleteThe speaker uses a lot of techniques to make his message stand out.First, he uses all three - ethos, pathos, and logos.Second, he uses an ample amount of rhetorical devices such as dramatic pauses, rhetoric question, and allusion. He also uses a anecdote.Lastly,he stands up straight and has a serious expression on his face.
ReplyDeleteThe speaker uses eye contact, repetition, and pathos, Ethos,And logos in order to appeal to his audience. He uses an ample amount of rhetorical questions, dramatic pauses, an allusion, and also an anecdote. When he is talking, he uses his hands a lot in motion, and stands straight and tall and looks around to see the audience. His face has a serious expression to make him look like he knows what he is talking about.
ReplyDeleteThe speaker uses a lot of techniques. He uses a lot of rhetorical questions and dramatic pauses. The speaker also uses all of ethos, pathos, and logos. He also keeps eye contact and a serious face.
ReplyDeleteI think that this man is a fantastic public speaker. He speaks with confidence and I like his use of hand motions. He uses logos at the beginning and pathos in the middle. He also uses repetition ( word have, are, and can be power ). He is a very good public speaker.
ReplyDeleteThe speaker looks at the audience basically the whole time. He also says it with like exaggeration.
ReplyDeleteThis speaker uses ethos by telling jokes to loosen up his listeners and make them want to listen to what he has to say. He uses logos by using statistics to back up his opinion and argument. He uses pathos by telling a story to make you understand one of his points and so you'll fell what he has to say. He uses hand motions to express what he is saying, he also uses symbolism, by using the cigarette, to better explain his points. He also uses smooth transitions to move from his example and tie it into his point this is what he uses that makes him a good speaker.( By Claire Harris)

My writing strength is focus and organization because I can stay on topic. My biggest weakness is language because it is hard not to use contractions and think of substitute words for smaller words.
